shhh secretWhat follows is my questionnaire for participating in Secret Pal 12. But I invite anyone who wants to learn more about me to read it!

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like? I am definitely a sock yarn junkie, and of course I always fall for luxury blend type of yarns. I also love working with linen and I always enjoy discovering yarns and fibers I’ve never tried before! I’ve just started learning how to spin yarn, so I’m looking forward to trying all different types of fibers and blends in rovings.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? I have a sewn roll-up for DPN’s, and a Namaste case for straight needles. I keep my circular needles in their original packaging (for their labels), so the only thing I am really lacking in the storage department is something for crochet hooks. I generally just scatter the hooks around the house/purse for helping out with knitting projects!

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? I have been knitting for a few years, mostly self-taught. I’ve been known to scour the internet for techniques and patterns– but now we have Ravelry for that, of course! I consider my skill set pretty advanced, considering that I’m often incorporating previously untried techniques into projects, and I’ve been working on some designing for publication.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? Amazon and The Loopy Ewe

5. What’s your favorite scent? I’m not particularly excited by home/body scents, but the ones I like are savory: Cinammon, vanilla, “holiday,” etc.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy? Yes I have a major sweet tooth! Mostly chocolate or mint chocolate but really anything! With the exception of candy with nuts.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I dabble in paper crafts and beading, and I used to be very excited about sewing, but these days I’m almost entirely devoted to fiber arts… Dyeing, knitting and knitwear design, and now spinning! I just started a few weeks ago but I already know it’s going to be a big deal… how soon until I can afford a wheel? ;-)

8. What kind of music do you like? I have a pretty wide taste in music, but more importantly I am always interested in finding new artists! I love that I can play music at work, but I’m constantly trying to find artists that are fun for everyone at work to listen to together. I also use my Ipod during work, so any and all new music is great for getting through the workweek!

9. What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand?
Favorite color is something I’ve talked a lot about on this blog! If you do a search for it at the top of this page, I’m sure you can come up with my previous debates on the topic. I love green/brown earthtones, and I have a ton of orange things in my life since it used to be my widely-known favorite color. Lately I’ve been finding myself attracted to blue, too.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets? I live with my partner Rob and our family consists of an extremely needy 7 year old… cat! London is definitely my lap love and fiber-arts helper.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? All of the above– I live in Chicago! I’m constantly planning new scarf/mitten/sock/slipper projects to keep up warm in the long winters.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? I knit socks the most, but I think that’s just because they are so portable and relatively quick. I also like knitting toys, gloves and baby items since they are good for “instant gratification” type of projects. I do knit sweaters and garments, too, because I *love* to wear them, but I just wish they were easier to get finished in a reasonable amount of time!

13. What are you knitting right now?
Active projects: Socks for secret design project, colorwork toy for Rob’s desk, and baby socks for my expectant sister-in-law. Hibernating: Sunrise circle jacket, earthtones scrap yarn afghan, second sock for a gift pair, and countless still-in-my-head design ideas.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts? Yes but I also like to give them!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I use all needle types for all different types of projects/yarns. For socks I use circs and dpn’s interchangeably… usually depending on what the pattern calls for. I love my interchangeable circ sets and I like to use straights for small, quick projects like washcloths, potholders or scarves.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? I do, thankfully!

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
About a year, if I am remembering them all…

18. What is your favorite holiday? I like Thanksgiving because it always falls on or near my birthday. But for me, I love any day where I can stay home relaxing and working on projects… isn’t Saturday a national holiday?

19. Is there anything that you collect? Other than yarn and roving???! I have a collection of books I’ve been meaning to read, but that’s not really the same thing!

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I subscribe to Vogue and Interweave, but lately I’ve been tempted by Spin Off. I keep meaning to get myself some more EZ titles (for the patterns like BSJ). I have stitch dictionaries but I’ve been eyeing the Nicky Epstein edging series. I used to work in a library and took home all the knitting books for perusal, but since I changed industries I haven’t been keeping my must-have list as updated, so I am always curious about new releases.

21. Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?
All of them!

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Definitely! Size is ladies US 10.

23. When is your birthday? November 22.

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what’s your ID? My Ravelry username is TelmahQ. I keep both my notebook and stash faithfully updated, so those are a pretty good reference for my fiber and project choices for the past year.
