Alphamitts
If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know that I’ve been hard at work brainstorming and knitting up colorwork motifs. It’s a weekly routine I’ve been enjoying the familiarity of: thinking and charting during the week, knitting on Saturdays, blocking and photos on Sundays, and blogging on Mondays. This new pattern – “Alphamitts” – grew up as an off-shoot of that process… a colorwork idea that was too big to fit on a swatch!

“Alphamitts” is a child-sized pattern, available for free download here, that uses small amounts of two colors of Knit Picks Palette or similar fingering-weight yarn. The pattern includes a full-page color chart, and tips to start you in the right direction if you should want to adjust these for adult sizing. The mittens are identical – you do not reverse the thumb shaping for the second hand – so that the two palms held together show the entire alphabet motif. The perfect cheat-sheet for your sing-songy sweetheart!

This is so awesome!
What a genius idea. Love.
I see! I didn’t realize when I saw them on Rav that they were child-sized. Wouldn’t they make a super special treat for a kindergartener or for learning to read or finishing a first book?
too. cute.
Cool mittens!!
Those are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
Cute idea! And my mind immediately goes to variations, like what would happen if you used a variegated yarn like Noro for the letters? Or did them in school colors? What fun….
those are too cute!

This is a great pattern! May I ask permission to make many pairs for the mitten tree at my husband’s church for next winter? The mittens would all be donated to Women’s Resource Center or to the Foster Care Programs of Racine/Kenosha, Wisconsin.
