trying turtles

In between sittings of working on the second of Turtlegirl’s Red Dwarf socks, I’ve been knitting…. turtles!

This is Smariek’s Turtle Cloth pattern, a smallish but definitely cuteish washcloth currently in use by the bathroom sink! This author stays away from charts and her patterns are line-by-line stitch instructions, so I had a little bit of a hard time following the small print of my print-out, considering I had my glasses off so I could watch TV… or was it the TV itself that was distracting me from following the pattern? In any case, I had to make up the head and front legs shaping myself once I was waaay too far from the original instructions to salvage the original plan. I didn’t have the same problem with the adorable Ursine Cloth.

That little guy is so cute! I really love the dishcloth patterns that use embossed shaping instead of just knit-purl charts.. the designs read out so much more clearly with some cabling and increasing and decreasing. I’m going to knit Smariek’s Twin Leaf Lace embossed cloth pattern with the rest of the yarn (Knitpicks Main Line.. it’s cotton with a small amount of wool which is unusual I guess for cloths but it’s what I had in the stash when the mood struck to knit turtles..) and that will bring and end to this washcloth mini-spree. I just might have to reuse the Ursine pattern though… wouldn’t he look nice on a kid’s sweater? On a sock ankle??

Hee! How cute! I will have to print out that turtle pattern and give it a go myself.

Very cute–that Smariek’s quite a designer. But the bear looks like a bunny to me. Still cute. I’ll be interested to know how that yarn holds up on washcloths.
